Ransomware

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a form of malware which can encrypt files on a device, rendering any files and the IT systems unusable.  Threat actors then demand ransom in exchange for decryption of the malware.  Ransomware actors often target and threaten to sell or leak exfiltrated data or authentication information if the ransom is not paid.

Threat actors continue to find new types of ransomware attacks.  U.S. federal agencies continue to educate public awareness of ransomware attacks and associated tactics across the country and around the world.
